Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion is a skin-rejuvenating procedure that uses a rapidly rotating device to sand the outer layers of skin. The procedure makes way for a new, smoother, younger looking layer of skin to replace the skin that's been treated. Results are generally quite remarkable and long-lasting. Dermabrasion can be done alone or in combination with other cosmetic procedures.

Dermabrasion can decrease the appearance of,

  • Acne scars. Removing and improving the appearance of acne scars are the most common uses for Dermabrasion.
  • Scars caused by surgery or trauma, if they are not deep.
  • Superficial skin growths, such as rhinophyma. On rare occasions, Dermabrasion may be used to treat small cysts, epidermal nevi, somebasal cell skin cancers, or Bowen's disease.
  • Tattoos (rarely). There are better ways to remove tattoos (such as with laser resurfacing).
  • Color changes in the skin (solar lentigines or melasma). Chemical peels or laser resurfacing are used more commonly than Dermabrasion for these problems.
  • Fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth.

During Dermabrasion, your skin will be numbed with anesthetics. You might also have the option of taking a sedative or using general anesthesia, depending on the extent of your treatment.

Skin treated with Dermabrasion will be sensitive and bright pink for several days. Healing usually occurs within 7 to 10 days. Generally, most people can resume their normal occupation in seven to 10 days after Dermabrasion. Patients are instructed to avoid unnecessary direct and indirect sunlight for three to six months after the procedure and to use a sunscreen on a regular basis when outdoors.
