Phototherapy

Sunlight has been used in the treatment of skin diseases for thousands of years. The ancient Egyptions used a plant extracted substance (thought to be psoralen) which, when combined with exposure to sunlight treated vitiligo.

Ultraviolet light (UV) from the sun causes immune systems cells in the skin to decrease their activity. It is only in the past century that alternative sources of ultraviolet radiation have been developed. This new technology allows skin conditions to be treated in controlled environment that does not rely on natural sunlight.

Phototherapy in the treatment of chronic inflammatory skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, PLE (polymorphic light eruption) and vitiligo; is a safe way to treat large body surface areas of involvement or smaller areas that have failed topical therapies.

Our phototherapy unit offers you the possibility to treat only the required area of the body by its flexible hand/foot unit. On average, phototherapy requires visits to our clinic 2-3 times a week for a period of 3-4 months. Depending upon your response to treatment you may need maintenance treatment.

Narrow-band UVB phototherapy

Used for more than 75 years to treat skin conditions such as psoriasis, this therapy works by exposing the skin to a type of ultraviolet (UV) light called UVB. The UVB light penetrates the skin, and this slows the growth of the skin cells that lead to these specific skin conditions. UVB light therapy treatment is excellent in controlling psoriasis, vitiligo, eczema and PLE (polymorphic light eruption) or Prickly Heat.

PUVA Phototherapy

The word 'PUVA' comes from combining the words 'psoralen' and 'UVA' Psoralen is a medicine that makes the skin more sensitive to UVA light. Using psoralen before exposing to a UVA light source can be very effective for clearing a range of skin conditions including psoriasis, vitiligo, eczema, PLE (polymorphic light eruption) / Prickly Heat and other skin conditions.
