Hair Transplant

Hair transplant surgery involves moving scalp hair and hair follicles from an area called the donor dominant area (where the hair will continue to grow throughout the life of most individuals) to an area with thinning hair or baldness.

WHAT IS FOLLICULAR UNIT EXTRACTION (FUE)?

FUE is a minimally invasive method of advanced hair transplant where balding areas are restored by removing individual Follicular Units directly from donor area one unit at a time and transplanting on the recipient area.

The procedure involves making micro punches (to harvest hair) with a very specialized punch instrument allowing for the majority of the scalp to be left intact. FUE is an instrument-dependent hair transplant procedure. Hence the type and the quality of tools used for FUE significantly affect its artistic outcome.

HOW IS FUE PERFORMED?

First, the recipient sites (sites where the grafts are placed) are created. Once we know the exact number of grafts that are needed, the back of the scalp is shaved and each individual hair graft is removed with a special punch device. The grafts are then placed one at a time back in to the recipient area. The main advantage of the procedure is that there is no linear cutting. The placing of grafts in the recipient area is performed the same way it is done in the traditional strip method.

WHAT IS FOLLICULAR UNIT TRANSPLANTATION (FUT)?

For today, FUT is the basic method in hair restoration surgery. In case of strip method donor material is taken from the permanent zone (the area in the back) in the shape of an eclipse, individual follicular units are prepared from the donor strip and then placed in premaked recipient sites.

Strip method gives an opportunity of harvesting big amount of grafts which can safely be transplanted in one session, allowing the patient to complete the hair restoration as quickly as possible. Wastage of follicular units during strip surgery is minimal and the survivability of transplanted grafts is high.

HOW IS FUT PERFORMED?

In FUT method; a thin horizontal strip is used. This strip is three to four inches in length depending upon recipient area. Hair follicles are extracted from the scalp's donor area with the help of strip. Strip extraction will be followed by suturing after which the wound is required to be healed.

It is important to note that the creation of recipient sites and the placing of hair grafts are exactly the same in both FUE and FUT (strip) procedures. The only difference is the way hair follicles are harvested. Therefore as far as the final result is concerned, both methods will provide the same cosmetic results. The essence of these procedures is that the hair is transplanted into the balding area as individual follicular units, so that it will look totally natural and be undetectable as a hair transplant.
